Total Eclipse Part Two and a Special Treat!

As promised, more from our class with Jackie and the ladies in the class! Such great combinations--it really is hard to choose a favorite block....so, let's take a look at Sharon's blocks:

Look how smart and creative Sharon is, she made small crazy patch blocks out of the scraps!

This is the Christmas Tree Skirt that Maria brought in to share with us--isn't this the most beautiful tree skirt you have ever seen? That is Maria beaming on the right--gorgeous, just gorgeous. She told us that she completed this tree skirt in 6 days at a retreat and it was her first Judy Niemeyer! Wow!!!

Well, that is the up date from this class; one more to go in a couple of weeks! If you ever have a chance to take a class from Jackie, jump on it--you will learn so much and accomplish even the most difficult quilts with ease! Happy quilting!

Total Eclipse Class Continued

We had our second of three classes on the Judy Niemeyer quilt, Total Eclipse. It was another excellent class! Jackie once again gave perfect instructions with plenty of demonstration so that we were able to come home and complete what we needed to do. I want to show you some progress made by the other nine ladies--they will all be fantastic quilts; and very different!

Barbara (not me) had her quilt planned and colored on Week 1--great progress today too!:

The Ghastlies -- Delayed by Snow!

Well, I am so happy to finally post my Ghastlies creations! I so loved participating in this event--thank you Madame Samm for all of your organization and hard work; I know that it was no easy feat! The first item is a hot cup sleeve! Love the orange:

There is nothing better than having a hot cup of coffee, latte, or hot chocolate with the Ghastlie cat! Love the cat!
Next: To take your lunch to work (Deli Lunch Tote):

With plenty of pockets for your utensils, napkin, etc! Love this pattern:

The only problem has been everyone wants one now!
Last but not least, one of my favorite quilt patterns (The Big EZ)--makes up a wonderful double/queen size quilt in no time! I love all the Ghastlie fabric, so I incorporated several pieces of various The Ghastlie fabrics into this one:

I am not all that pleased with the photographs--will have to do some more during the day light hours--but would that be Ghastlie?

Now the Ghastlie quilt can fly off to the longarm quilter and the remainder of the fabric can tuck away until later when the urge rises up by the full crisp Fall moon to create some more Ghastlie treasures!

Back up and Running!

Happy New Year!

Well, I am finally back up and running! Even I had to go back and look at my last post date! That October storm knocked us into November and then December before we had everything fixed. It feels so good to be back with all of my blogging friends--thank you so much for sticking by me and thank you so much for all of your comments I was just able to publish!

Quick Storm Information:

This is what we ended up with:

You can tell by the snow on our deck, grill and shed that it was one large snowstorm! Then we had no power for seven days. Follow that with no cable and when we finally got cable back only to have the modem go down! We ended up getting a new modem, which had to be sent back, and finally were up and working around Christmas. I was keeping up to date from my iPad, but couldn't post any pictures. Then the holidays were busy, top that with my daughter having all four widom teeth removed on December 22 and you can tell just how busy we have been. We did have storm damage to clean also--trees, mailbox etc. All that is behind us now! As a matter of fact, we haven't had any snow since that storm and it looks like a clear week this week too! That will be fine with me--mid January and no snow and not ba temperatures either!

On the Quilting front: I want to devote an entire post to The Ghastlies, and Quiltie swapping so they will each have their own day this week.
Today, I am going to post the pictures of my most recent class. I am doing this now because my teacher and two other bloggers have posted today, so I am going to keep with that theme!

My New Year's resolution was to learn something new each month all year long. I have always wanted to do a Judy Niemeyer pattern and actually have bought a couple. Then I looked at the directions, folded it back up and put it away. That is until Jackie of Canton Village Quilt Works decided to teach a class and I knew I had to sign up! Jackie is becoming a certified Niemeyer teacher and has visited with Judy Niemeyer as her blog will tell you. Well, I was right--great class, excellent teacher! She broke down the directions, we all were able to make great strides, understand completely and come home and continue on our own successfully! Now mind you when I left class, I did not even have the first unit complete, but as you can see I now have eight done! Only 40 more units to complete by Saturday--we will see! Do stop over at Jackie's blog to see the rest of the units--they are all gorgeous! I will bring my camera to class next week!

No power

Nor'easter Snowstorm on October 29, 2011

I had to take a break from my quilt room, where I am finishing up some of my Ghastlie projects to take pictures of what is going on outside! The date says it all.....October 29, 2011.

Here are the beginning pictures at about 2:00 this afternoon when the storm is beginning to get up a head of steam....

Even my corgi is not impressed but she can still get out and about....

Ok, she is telling me "I have had enough exploring, I remember this stuff from last winter."

Now, it is 5:00 p.m. and this is how it looks, this is the same Rose of Sharon tree as in the first picture:

Look at the lamp post that was in the earlier photo and see the "hat" it is wearing now:

My son just measured the snow on the back porch and it is 11" -- yes, that is eleven inches of snow and it is not suppose to end until early morning!

Oh, my dog wouldn't even get off the front porch to show you how deep it is this time and give you a photo comparison to the early photo with her in it. This time she stood next to me and looked up at me as if to say, "You don't really think I am going down into that--I will only go if you do!" Uh, no way!

I think the roof tells it all--and we are not anywhere near finished! Needless to say, my husband is working--as he is a lineman for Connecticut Light and Power. The wind is picking up and there are already 67,000 outages in our state--I will see him Monday or so...
So back up to the quilt room I go and hope and pray I do not lose power! Stay warm East Coast and New England! Halloween isn't until Monday...

The blog, As Sweet As Cinnamon ,recently asked how my blog came to be named "A Corgi To Quilt By." Well, the answer pretty much is how it sounds. Six years ago my children, mostly my daughter, wanted a puppy in the worst way. My husband and I hadn't had a dog since we were growing up--I had a black lab and he grew up with Saint Bernards. I thought about a smaller dog and loved Tasha Tudor's Corgi's, as I have a few of her books! My daughter did a lot of research on corgis and it was all good--they are very intelligent, very loyal, a lot of fun, a big dog mentality in a small package and have relatively few problems. She was also working for a Vet as part of her SAE school work and a corgi breeder came in with puppies to have their tails docked. She fell in love with a small female and before we knew it, she was home with us. She is the love of our lives! She is always with us, very intelligent--performs wonderful tricks, and brings so much into our lives. She loves to sit at my feet. My daughter is now a senior in college and has her own six month old corgi with her. They are great friends and love to play together. Ours loves our cats too! Our indoor cat also loves her! So that is about it--when I was thinking of names for the blog, it was only natural to have something to do with our corgi!

Quilt Guild Show and Giveaway

I want to show a few quilts from our guild quilt show that I found to be unique and outstanding! Very talented ladies that is for sure!

Absolutely love this bird--the colors really grabbed me and brought me in!

I love the ocean and everything to do with the ocean! I find it so relaxing! This is a wonderful, original designed quilt made from a personal experience of the quilter on a trip to Florida!

Love the flow of this design! The colors draw your eye in and the subtle shades let you flow through the quilt from top to bottom.

This was made as a commissioned quilt for an residential elderly home to cover the bodies as they leave the building and allow residents to say their final respects. What a beautiful covering.

The fabrics used in this quilt grabbed my eye! The design is one that I love and I love the composition.

Fall Giveaway! Yipee 200+ Followers!

What a wonderful package that was waiting for me when I arrived home from school today! First, I read the return address and knew it was from Purple Pam who had a giveaway about a week ago for her followers. I couldn't wait to bring it inside and open it up!
When I did open it, it was even more beautiful than I had seen on her blog! She had even completed six of the blocks--what a bonus to have such a head start--and let me tell you what gorgeous work Purple Pam does; her piecing is exquisite! Take a look:

Now take a look at what else was there--the finishing kit and the remainder of the blocks neatly packaged to piece by me (and my trusty helper) Here he is taking a "sneak" peek:

What I have been working on and Back to School -- Finally!

Well, Hurricane Irene has come and gone but many in our state are still feeling her effects! The teachers just went back to school today and the students will come in on Tuesday, Sept. 2., that is a week later than scheduled. That means less time quilting, sewing and blogging--but a little quilting a day is better than none at all!

I have been doing some type of quilting everyday--and that makes me feel good! I am sewing the binding on my flower quilt (earlier post) and working on my new Halloween quilt:

As well as enjoying the blooms in my garden:

and the fading butterfly bush; although it is still very active with various butterflies and bees:

So, I am still enjoying the very warm afternoons and all that is still blossoming as we move into September and fall. My cat and corgi helpers staying close at hand both in the quilt room and outside for the corgi!

In the Eye of Irene

Well, I better get a quick post in now because the eye of Irene is scheduled to pass over us later tonight and who knows about our power. I have to finish getting my binding on my hydrangea quilt so that I can work on that if I can't use the sewing machine! I also am making sure I have some embroidery to do also! I can continue working on my Butterfuly blocks too!

I probably won't be working on my Halloween, unless I get a few more things done before any power outage--it will be so nice NOT to have a power outage! I could sit home tomorrow and sew--we are ready to be inside!
Well, as I said, just a quick note--off to get lots of things done so I can work without power if necessary...

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the path or surroundings of Hurricane Irene!! May everyone be safe and simply have more time to quilt!

Gorgeous Handmade and Handpainted Buttons!

I just love buttons, who doesn't! I love looking at them and using them in my quilt projects. I have gotten back to embroidery and love the look of little buttons in embroidery also! But cute buttons are not always easy to find, I know I have looked for just the "right" button for a special project and ended up using an "ok" button because a special one was just not found. Well, did I ever run across a fantastic blog and button source!

The name of the blog is ButtonMad and they have the cutest handmade and handpainted buttons you ever want to see! Take a look at the adorable buttons available, the picture below is from their site! The best part of this company is that they employ women from South Africa to make these buttons--thus helping two groups at the same time--the individual buying buttons and the women of South Africa!

They have giveaways too--this was the latest one and yes, I was a very lucky winner of these adorable owl buttons--but that is not why I am sharing this; I want everyone to be able to find adorable handmade buttons to use in your projects!

Pin Toppers

I have talked about my pin toppers and how much I enjoy them in my two special pin cushions but did not realize that I need to show them also! Someone asked to see them so I have taken a few pictures to show you.

Friday Night Sew-In!

Well, it was a Friday Night Sew-In and it was great to be a part of it--even though I didn't get the entire Friday night sewing! I started after I had gone with my daughter to finish up some things for her to go back to college; for her senior year! So getting going about 9:00 p.m. was not what I had originally planned, but anytime sewing is better than no time!

Let's start with the fabric collection:

You can see that I am working on a Halloween quilt. The name of it is, The Big EZ, by Cottonwood patterns; I absolutely love it for big prints! The Halloween cats are too cute to cut into small pieces! As you can also see, I have a furry "helper" in the far right corner. He will definitely become more obvious as time goes on. I should have entered him in Pets on Quilts!
Next, I have chosen the two fabrics for the four-patch and cut and pieced them all together:

I also cut all of the strips and corner squares--way too many of them (120 of each).
Now to cut the large 7 1/2" squares of three different fabrics, here comes the helper:

I will be continuing this tonight (Saturday) and tomorrow--hopefully being able to show you a finished top in a day or two. This top goes together so easily--look at my previous post with the flower quilt!
While looking at fabrics here are some other pictures of my cat hard at work helping me decide which fabrics should stay and which should go:

It really is amazing I get anything completed with all the "help" I get! Sometimes, he rearranges pieces at night if they haven't been sewn together yet--that is always fun!
Well, I had a fantastic Friday Night Sew--can't wait for next month! I really accomplished alot more than it seems to show!

Some more sewing, embroidering that is in progress

I have not been idle at all this summer! In between working, yes, I have had to go in to work a few times this summer; I have been getting some wonderful times to piece or embroider on items that I have been wanting to accomplish or like the previous post try a new pattern that fits the fabric!

The first piece to show you is the sunflower that I have started, put down and come back to. This is completed in the embroidery hoop and is a combination of applique and embroidery. I still have a lot to go, but this is one block to show for now:

Next, is a tablerunner that I have wanted to do for quite some time--it is fish and I really do love the fabric from my stash that I used in this table runner--next get it sandwiched and quilted! I do quilt the smaller ones!

It's been a long time.....

I know that it has been a long time since my last post--so I will briefly say why. First and foremost has been work. I accepted additional responsibilities this year and that meant a great deal more time, unfortunately, the time had to come from somewhere and it was my quilting and blogging time! Even though I teach high school, I have been busy at work even this summer.

However, I have made time for quilting! It has been so wonderful to relax, create and sew once again! So without further waiting, I will show you what I have been working on--I have spent a lot of time lately on sewing/applique/embroidery for the past month and love every single minute/second of it! I have also been to a few quilt shows, but will save some of that for later!

This quilt was a joy to work on! The pattern is called, The Big EZ, and it certainly was! I have started another one with Halloween fabric. Right now it is shown on my daughter's bed, she hopes it stays there when it is quilted too--we will see; she will be off to college in two weeks for her senior year. Where did that time go; that is another story for sure!

This is a close up of the large block--which is the reason I used the pattern that I did--it allows me to showcase the fabric I did not want to cut up!

While I may not post daily, I will at least try to post much more often than before--my goal will be weekly, however if it is every other week when I return to school that would be better than what it has been! I have a few more things to show you and another post to make about a new blog that I fell in love with etc. That will be tomorrow (for sure)!

Well, it is wonderful to be back, thank you to everyone who stood by me while I was so involved with work, family etc. and thank you so much to Joanne who has prompted and urged me back to my blog! She will be the next post!

Great to be back, it feels like a renewal with friends, now here's to keeping it up! Happy in quilting and blogging!

It is suppose to be Spring, however we are expecting snow tomorrow into Thursday--up to six inches! The 70 degrees we had on Friday was such a tease! Well, maybe I will be able to work on my Sunflower quilt in the hoop! That would be fantastic! I will have to show a sneak peak of it tomorrow!

It has been a very long time and a long snowy, hard winter. Today is the first day of Spring, and I can't think of a better day to return to my very neglected blog! I am hoping that with Spring, I am renewed and can bring about an informative and fun blog! While I have not started out this year in the same quilting manner as last year--which was such a wonderful beginning of sewing or quilting every day regardless of how long; I have still been involved with some quilting, a quilt show in Somerset, New Jersey already and a couple of quilt classes!

I have also come back to reading my favorite blogs and one that I visited, Bejeweled by Barb, is having a fantastic giveaway for some very special buttons! A company called: ButtonMad which originated in South Africa and empowering women by offering them a craft and employment to better themselves. Check out their website and see the incredible buttons they are making! Absolutely awesome!

Thank you Cheryl for setting me straight on Kelly's mother's name, it is Donitta! Well, with that cleared up, I have a few more pictures to show from that wonderful evening!

Janet thrilled us with this original design! Janet has several published patterns, and this will also become one added to her original pattern list! It is stunning!

Karen, who has a blog which many of us enjoy: http://selvageblog.blogspot.com/ created this raw edge quilt block quilt. Karen and I met this summer in person, as we discovered we do not live far from one another. She came to quilt guild on Friday evening with me and we were delighted with this quilt and her asterisk quilt. I am truly so lucky to have made such a wonderful new friend and such a great author and quilter. As some of you may know, Karen has authored the book, "Quilts from the Selvage Edge". You never know who you will meet or who lives close to you until you open your eyes, ears, mind and heart and take a look! This was a great guild meeting--a great way to kick off the new year!

If you look on the table behind Bonnie, you will see Karen's asterisk quilt on the left and on the right the raw edge quilt. Go to her blog and read all about the raw edged quilt and much more!

Busy Week and Quilt Guild

The first week of school has proven to be very busy--even though I feel that my family and myself is still on summer mode! We are making the transition, kicking and screaming (figuratively speaking only) every day as we wake up at 4:45 to get ready for school and work. The weekend has flown by so fast that I can't believe it. Granted it started Friday evening with my monthly quilt guild meeting (such fun and I will show pictures), then on to Party with Patrick and our neighborhood block party all on Saturday! Today was my husband's birthday--we took him out to eat and let him have a great day! I also found time to work on Boy Scout Mother's Auxiliary, school work, posting here and working on a Halloween quilt for an exchange I am involved in with Burnt Woods Primitives--it is my first Halloween exchange and I can't wait! I will show a picture once it is sent off to its recipient! It has been a wonderful weekend with much cooler temperatures too--we are at 57 degrees at this time--last week we were in the 70's at night and 90's during the day; I am happy for the cooler temperatures though as it truly makes it feel like fall, which is one of my favorite times of the year!

Well, it is time to show some truly spectacular work from the very talented quilters in our quilt guild!

Isabel pieced and quilted this adorable quilt; I just love that bottom right sheep going the opposite direction, someone is always going against the grain!

Isabel, on the right, also created this beautiful quilt! Perri on the left is our wonderful President, who always lends a hand to all of the Show and Tell quilters!

This is another one of Isabel's quilts that she finished this summer--she is one busy lady!

This quilt was created by Kelly's mother and it is hysterical! I have to get her name--I think it is Maggie. This uses the "fruit" ladies fabric!

This quilt was made by Pat--an extremely talented and prolific quilter! Her machine quilting and quilts are all gorgeous!

This is just the cutest baby quilt! Another made by Pat!

This mandela quilt was made by Pat's daughter--it is her FIRST quilt! She designed and made this quilt as part of a college degree. The seasons are all represented between the trees. My first quilt did NOT look like this! She is obviously following in her mother's footsteps! It is so beautiful.

Bonnie creates these great quilts every month for charity! She brings them in and leaves them with our charity chairperson! She is such a generous lady--thank you Bonnie!

A Quick Post

Tonight was a ton of school work and Boy Scout Mother's Auxiliary work as the meeting is tomorrow evening. I should be set to get my pictures together and my needed posts on Thursday! Computer is Fixed! One year of Blogging!!

Yeah, my computer was fixed and up and running Saturday! It died a quick death the end of August, just as I was going back to school and I have been lost for over a week. I was able to read messages at various places but could not blog or answer. It was more painful to me than my computer!

Thank you so much to Brian who was able to quickly diagnose the problem and then install the new parts even quicker! The poor tired computer needed a new PCI video card and a battery.

It couldn't have decided to not work at a worse time! I needed all of my school files to start the new year, I needed my Southford Falls Quilt Guild files, which begins again this Friday evening; and my BS Mother's Auxiliary files which begins again this Wednesday evening. As President of MA, membership chair at Guild and just teaching, I was quickly going crazy to try to get enough together in case I would not have a working computer......thankfully, I am up and running and getting everything in order!

I am also able to be back on my blog! Today marks the one year anniversary of my blog and I didn't even think I would be posting yet! I am putting together something for a giveaway to mark the occassion--so stayed tuned!

I have a few things to get in order for blogging so I will work on that today and work that needs to be completed. I will even try to get back to this post later today!

For now--it feels so good to be back--happy quilting!

New Hampshire to Keepsake Quilting and New England Quilt Show

To take a trip to a quilt show and a quilt shop with a friend is awesome and one great way to bring summer to a close, one week before I have to go back to work--(tears now softly falling down my face). Yes, summer is closing for me and another year of school will soon be opening for my son and myself. It is simple pleasures of taking the entire day; yes that means getting up at 4:30 a.m. and getting home at 9:15 p.m.; and so very very worth it! My wonderful husband said, "Go, but please don't bankrupt us!" With that said, we were off! We drove to Manchester, New Hampshire to the New England Quilt Show with a few highlights here:

No commentary with the pictures tonight, just all truly amazing and gorgeous! This is about half of the ones I photographed--tomorrow the remainder. No pictures from Keepsake Quilting, but beautiful scenery and a great quilt shop! Until tomorrow! Happy Quilting!

A New Bag!

Today was spent making a new bag. Now I am not the greatest purse maker at all....I usually take too long making one and still have a couple that have become UFO's just waiting for a little more to go. I have friends who can whip out gorgeous bags in no time at all--and they always look so perfect, like they were purchased at the latest shop! Well, today I started and finished a bag all in one day--whoo hoo! That definitely is a first for me! It was a very easy bag to make, probably the easiest I have ever done; or I am finally learning about bag construction! Whatever the reason, it is totally complete! Here are a couple photos of my new bag:

I think that I love this design so much because of the cute handles--and I didn't have to make them! The design did not call for pockets inside, but I put those in too! Lastly, I love the fabric! This is fabric that I had won and I loved it and wanted to use it in something special--I finally found the perfect project for the gorgeous fabric! I will be stylin' tomorrow with my new purse! Tomorrow I really need to work on a few projects to finish--although time will be short for sewing with too many places that I need to be during the day and evening!

Sunday happenings!

Just a few updates on a quieter Sunday. My son is home from Boy Scout summer camp and really glad to be home, relaxed today mostly--being gone for 3 weeks this summer was quite a change for him. He did have a great time though! He was mostly shocked at the pictures of the bobcat and wished he had seen him.

As for the bobcat, he was never caught--so he is out there somewhere, hopefully healing!

I have had a normal Sunday--doing laundry (lots of boy scout laundry) etc. and some sewing! Worked to finish the 4-patch blocks for Patches for Lissa on Jane's Fabrics and Quilts--check it out if you are able and willing to help out. Will get them in the mail now!

Lunch and a Bobcat!

I was enjoying a late lunch today with my friends Laurie and Brenda, when Brenda said, "Barb, be very quiet and look at what is coming out of your woods." I looked around the table out window and there he was, a very good size bobcat. He walked ever so slowly around my house to the front yard and crossed over the driveway, then we lost site of him. He was walking very strangely, almost as if he had been hit or clipped by a car. We did call the police animal control, because the bobcat was injured, and the officer was shocked at his size in the picture. He even wanted his supervisor to see it! It never amazes me the wildlife I have around here: black bear, bobcat, deer, fox, at times coyote and turkeys. We have even had a flock of turkey vultures on our house.....that creeped me out! Anyway, he is pretty good size! I have been weeding in my garden, I am going to have to keep an eye out a little better than I do...

Now that I had the black bear I had to make a quilt, will I have to do a bobcat now?

I just have to show the pictures of the turkey vultures...we never could figure out why they came; nothing was dead in the area that we knew about.....anyway:

Don't you just think they are the creepiest bird to look at--and we came home to them on our roof and in our trees; there were five of them!

Well, I really need to get some sewing done, have had too many other things going on today! Until later or tomorrow, happy quilting!

UFO and a Basket Block

It is so good to bring out something to work on and to see progress being made on the project. Yesterday I pulled out an UFO that I have loved but put aside to work on other things and made some real strides in the piecing of the top. It was not even completely cut out, but now it is all cut out and it went from just pieces to six blocks finished. This pattern is called Take Five on Point and I love the batiks. I know that I will continue to play with the arrangement of the blocks once they are all finished. They are not shown on point here, but that was the easiest way for me to photograph my progress!

I also had the opportunity to finish the basket block that goes in a basket quilt. So I have been busy! It is batiks also--which I do truly love!

Black Bear

I have had a black bear in my yard this past year, more than once, and have posted pictures on my blog before. This time, I want to post a picture of the black bear wall hanging which I am working on. The design is called: Backdoor Bear and it is by Toni Whitney who designs for Bigfork Bay Cotton Company (this link takes you to their blog). They are a design company that produces patterns that I cannot get enough of! I love all of their designs. I also love their method of applique....while this is not finished and not the best picture I had to share it tonight:

I will probably try and take another one tomorrow in natural light so that you can truly see the colors--the bear is actually black not brown. The fabrics are all batiks! I also have a picture of the kitten that we raised from about 3 weeks old. He is definitely getting big and is extremely lovable. Loves to jump up and sleep in your lap, snuggles right in--when he is not playing with the dog or just running around.

Quilt Ladies Night Out

The Quilting Ladies got together for our monthly (we really try hard to all meet every month) night of quilting, laughing and pizza! We have a new person join us--she is not new to quilting, just our friendly quilt gathering; it was great as usual! Here are some pictures from that night:

Barb, our newest groupie, who is making 140 different blocks for ..... I am going to have to get the name of the quilt she is making again, but they are gorgeous and her work is impeccible:

Cathy, I know that she is serging aprons for her daughters and mother-in-law. They are adorable and she embellished and embroidered on each--so cute, this picture does not do it justice!

Laura is working on a wool mat--just beautiful!

Cheryl is working on the tree quilt that is so gorgeous! She is coming along and this is the next phase!

Somehow I did not get a picture of Pam during this session--I will have to make up for it at our next get together!

On another note:

We packed up our son to go to the BS Jamboree! This is just his bus of scouts--six coach buses left together to head to Philadelphia and tour Philly with jam packed days of activities:

He was gone from July 24 until August 5! What a trip and time he had--he still hasn't stopped talking about it, that is when he has been awake! They left and went to Philadelphia, onto Washington DC and then to AP Fort Hill VA where he and about 44,000 other scouts stayed and took part in the 100th year of Boy Scouting Jamboree! He came home late Wednesday evening and slept until almost noon on Thursday. Went to bed early and still slept in on Friday. We let him sleep and chill because today he left around noon for his troop's week at Boy Scout camp! I would say that he had a summer of Boy Scouts this year!

Where Did July Go?

Well, July was a very busy month! We went to see the 4th of July fireworks from the middle of the lake--that was a first and a lot of fun; couldn't have had a better seat!

We also were at the beach on the Cape for a time, very relaxing; not much quilting, but definitely a lot of reading! I read, The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand and The Gods of Newport by John Jakes. I really do love John Jakes and his historical fiction. I am now reading Charleston also by John Jakes, however, I am back home and doing some sewing and quilting so reading not as much as when I was away! This gives you a little taste of our area of the Cape--even when a storm rolls in over the ocean, it is still great to be there!

Well, that is some highlights from the beginning to middle of the month, I will continue tomorrow--more quilting going on then!

Roosters Party 2010

Well, I have finally returned and it is time for me to return to the blogging world and to display my roosters today! Now mind you, I do not have a lot of roosters at this point, but the ones I do have are very special to me! I also have a rooster quilt kit to make and some rooster fabric to make a another rooster table runner and/or table topper!

So, without further delay, my small, but growing, family of roosters.

These were passed down to me from my grandmother's collection, they are original milk glass:

Next, this rooster is actually a very heavy weight--probably meant to be a door stop. However, I enjoy it on my baker's rack or counter--it has never touched the floor!

Lastly, this grouping of hen and roosters is a collection of Venetian glass. I am always amazed to see how they can hand blow glass so beautifully!

I hope that you have enjoyed my small, but growing collection of roosters! I will work on the quilting aspect with roosters as the motif very soon!

I came home today from a friend's home with my son--so nice to be on vacation; stopped to pick up the mail and there was a package for me! It came from Michele of Betwixt the Betweens blog! She had a giveaway not too long ago, and I won five fat quarters! Yes, I love fabric--now who doesn't, that is such a silly statement on a quilter's blog, but I just had to say it anyway--just in case anyone might be wondering! Well, back on track--here is the size of the package--now I know there is more in there than just fat quarters!

So I open the mailing pouch and take out not one, not two, but three cute wrapped packages with a lovely note!

I am pretty sure that the package in the center, down front, is fabric--it is soft and squishy! But the two in the back--well, hard and rectangle! Just look at the wrapping, presentation is everything and this is fantastic--the attention to detail with the gorgeous ribbon bow is just too much, Michele you are beyond words (and that is something for me)! Now are you ready for what is inside? Just take a look--beautiful fabric, adorable recipe cards (ok, who told Michelle that I LOVE birds and need recipe cards) and of course chocolate! Now mind you, not just any chocolate, but Ghirardelli Dark Raspberry chocolate! I love chocolate, what quilter doesn't, but I absolutely love Ghirardelli's! I will buy at my local Costco's Ghirardelli's brownie mix and it is the best ever--my family will tell you that and so will my FBLA and FFA students--(yes, I do make brownies for my competing teams; it is a proven fact that teenagers learn better with Ghirardelli's brownies!)

Well, with all that shown, thank you, thank you Michele! You are too kind and too generous! I am very fortunate! Michele has the cutest named blog, link on the name above and check it out--it is truly great!

A Blog Not to Miss!

By chance, I had a blogger stop by and visit my blog today. She left the nicest comment and told me about a giveaway she was having. Her blog sounded intriguing as she lives on Cumberland Island, GA. so I stopped by. The Cumberland Island Quilt Chick is not to be missed! The photography of the island and its wildlife is magnificent! I have never seen Confederate money before, and she is using it in a quilt (she has printed it on fabric using a transfer method)! I have learned so much by traveling throughout her blog--it is truly amazing! I never thought that an island would have rattlesnakes, even in the South. Her writing and pictures give you a clear vision of what it is to live on this island that has no stores, or things that we take for granted every day.

She is having a giveaway, which is for a wonderful book, City Quilts--signed by the author, but that is not the only reason to visit. While I may never actually travel to Cumberland Island, I feel as if I almost have through her blog!

Definitely a must see stop in your summer travels.

What I worked on for Friday Night Sew-In

I actually did work on a project for Friday Night Sew-In, but had a couple of issues with the pictures so I am just posting now. Better late than never! I had tablerunners to make for my son's teacher and for someone at my school.
First I started with some 4" finished Thangles--I do like working with thangles, especially the larger ones.

I cut out 4 1/2" strips of my fabric choices:

Then I placed two strips right sides together and used the Thangles to make my half-square triangles!

From there I laid out the center of the tablerunner:

I then put on a 3" white border, and added a top and bottom white triangle. On the white end triangles I fused flower petals with a center and used my machine to blanket stitch around each petal and center.

I then attached the end pieces to the center, quilted it and added the binding! Voila--a finished tablerunner--then we put it in a pretty gift bag and off to school it went for his last day of seventh grade.

There we go--two tablerunners off to new owners! This was almost like a tutorial! Well, until tomorrow, happy quilting!

Quilt Guild tonight

I was able to get out to the last meeting of our Quilt Guild before the summer close. We have had great show and tells from the very talented members and I wanted to share a few with you. The first grouping is from our Guild Challenge--which was to create a quilt using mostly half-square triangles.

Mary won most creative with half-square triangles, beautiful origami flowers!

The kittens are growing!

The kittens are getting bigger and developing very playful personalities. They are chasing the dog and the corgi is now playing with them. We have come a long way in just a couple of days. Just a couple of examples:

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us! First, I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday--the weather in our area is suppose to be fantastic--enjoy outside activities and parades! Second, I am hoping to enjoy some free time! I just came in from a school FFA banquet, another night school function and I am almost caught up on work, so I am hoping to get some hand work in--I so need the time to relax. I will also be going to watch my son march in the parade in the school band on Monday! Lastly, I hope to get the garden work completed and some outside sun in the process!

On another note, the kittens are getting bigger and are really playing! My daughter let them run around in the family room and they had a ball! I will have to get more pictures taken too!

Not sewing, so I need something to do

Still waiting for the top to my new cutting table to come in...sigh...not here yet. I am hoping that this weekend I will be able to get enough taken care of to at least sew some. I have a few small things to do and would like to work on those.
What I have done a few nice days is go out on the boat with my husband and son. I have enjoyed soaking up the sun and watching the scenery and wildlife while they have fished, I have even thrown in a line once or twice.

I have been taking pictures though in my yard. These are the family of bluebirds that moved into the bluebird house that my son made in boy scouts. The vivid blue of this bird is just beyond words:

We are all enjoying being outside--even our dog as she is sitting out front basking in the sun:

Kittens

I think that the most asked for item is pictures of the kittens so here they are:

Well, there are the fur balls--just starting to play and jump around! They will go about 6 hours between feedings now; we are getting there....they don't stay still enough to get alot of good pictures--they are becoming very curious! My son is a huge help with them!

New Fabric and kittens

My daughter brought home a box from work. She works for a Vet., and is studying to become a Vet herself. Inside the box were two three week old kittens. They are about four weeks old now and we are bottle feeding and caring for them. The mother was killed by a car and eight kittens were brought in to the Vet. Everyone took two home to help them survive. They are now playing and doing very well. They are work, just like babies! Both of ours are spoken for--yeah, but it has been a nice experience especially for my son.
I ran out to a quilt shop today to view a demo on Paintsticks. While I have worked with them before, there were new techniques to try! Such fun--thanks Cheryl and YQ! While I was there, I bought fabric for two quilts, one large and one small....to be begun when my quilt room is back together--soon, I hope!

Not meaning to be a tease, but I will have to show pictures tomorrow...it is a little late, the kittens are sleeping and I am ready to turn in myself!

I am just so touched by all of your messages welcoming me back and missing me--who would have thought! It is the nicest thing in the world to have others thinking about you and missing my words....nothing profound; just fun! On the fun note, we recently had a skinny turkey in our yard at our bird feeder. Our cat, who is a great hunter, couldn't decide what to do about this big of a bird....

That is a pretty big bird.....

I am back!

It seems like forever, but I am back! I have had a very busy period in my life--nothing bad, just busy! I have had a hard time keeping up with all of the goings on. One of the most exciting things that I have been woking on since my April vacation has been the complete remake of my quilt room! It is still not complete, and not yet usable so I haven't really been sewing--but as soon as my cutting table is finished I can complete this project. It should prove to be a very workable space, which is what I have been striving for and I will take pictures to show! I have been to two quilt shows in the past two months also! I have squeezed both in--glad I did but can't believe I did! I will share a few of my favorite quilts, especially since I do not have anything of my own to share lately! Enjoy!

Where Does the Time Go and Thank You!

It is amazing to me how fast time can fly by! I have been so busy lately with my own children, work and holidays that I have not been posting much! April and May already look pretty booked in! I was trying to schedule a "Ladies Night Out" with some long standing friends and we had to opt for a Sunday Brunch--nothing wrong with that, but it is the only day in April we can all meet because of our busy schedules! I also want to say Thank You for two great packages I have received in the mail! First, my long ear bunny, Mr. Long Legs, ie "Pinky" from Sandi at A Legacy of Stitches and today a Grabbit Magnetic pincushion from Jean at Quilting Ranny. That is pretty lucky if I do say so myself! If you haven't visited those blogs, do stop by! Sandi was the creator and organizer of the Bunny Hop that just finished and it was fantastic--thank you Sandi for all that you do!

I have been doing quilt related things--and even sewed some tonight, but there have been several days which I have missed----I can't believe it, I was doing so well sewing/quilting a little bit everyday since January 1st and getting so much finished. Well, I am just going to jump back on the horse and get back to quilting a little everyday once again!

I went to a great quilt show with my friend Pam and took a few pictures which I will show, it will have to be tomorrow. I have also sewn a few pillowcases, but didn't take pictures because I was too rushed to get them into Easter baskets and out the door--that is ok.

A quilt Giveaway and back to my blog!

I discovered a new blog tonight, Banaghaisge and she is giving away a quilt that she has made for her blogaversary! It is gorgeous, yes go take a look and you may just choose to enter also! This was a good thing because it has gotten me back to my blog!

I have been out every night for the last week with work or other commitments and I just haven't fit in my blog very well. I also have been down to about 5 minutes of daily quilting, but thankfully that will change tomorrow! Also, my DD has been home from college this week on Spring break--only 6 more weeks and another year of college is finished--where did that year go? It has been wonderful to get the time with her--she goes back on Sunday...

One fantastic getaway was a trip to the New Jersey Quilt show last Saturday with a bus full of quilters! We had a blast! The vendors were first rate and the quilts were excellent! I will have to get some pictures on this site, I took a few and my friend Pam took many more! Tomorrow I am getting together with the monthly quilting group--it should be a lot of fun! So, I should get some pictures there too!

A Win and The Amaryllis

I went to the mailbox today and look what was inside, the three patterns that I won over at Sew Cindy's blog! Thank you, thank you! It is so much fun to win something and receive items in the mail--makes me feel like it is Christmas receiving a present! These are three great patterns, I have always wanted the Patchwork Pumpkin and I just love the birdhouses! I definitely need to make the sewing kit and keep me organized on the road--yeah!

I also have been working on my Amaryllis--here is how far I have gotten: I have traced all of the pattern pieces onto Steam-a-Seam Light! When I finish here, I will be heading upstairs to cut all apart and fuse to the fabric! Yeah, another step will be completed!

OPAM for February

Well, it is the last day of February--almost hard to believe! I have completed three quilts for OPAM this month! They are the three St. Patrick's Day quilts. I have also sent off completed blocks to Australia and on Monday to Mama Sparks to be included in quilts for a wounded marine and a very ill friend in Australia. So, all in all this has been a very good productive month! I will now be working on the Amaryllis this first week of March--along with going to the New Jersey Quilt show later in the week! Can't wait for that!

Spring Sewing Party

8:00 a.m.
Shower, coffee and a quick call to the quilt shop to see if they were still running their free University quilt class on Hot Ribbon Quilting--they are! That will be a quick trip!
9:00 a.m.

Off to Hot Ribbon Quilting: here are the photos of Cheryl demonstrating the hot ribbon technique and some of the quilts to make, I bought the Amaryllis to do and two of the books--the lighthouse and the first floral book.

Back home and putting things together to take to our once a month quilter's group. I am taking all that I need to begin the above amaryllis. I got all that I needed to make this--later today after the tablerunner and finishing the block I need to do! So off to upstairs to work and take some pictures of the what is happening!

5:30 - 11:30 p.m.:

Well, I have been busy, although it won't look like I got a lot accomplished! I did trace all of the pieces for the Amaryllis! The quilter's got together at Cheryl's and all worked hard. Pam and I are making the amaryllis:

She is further ahead than I am, I am still tracing all of the pieces onto Steam a Seam Light, Laura is working on her Picnic quilt for her soon to be daughter-in-law:

Cheryl is working on her trees, this time I have a picture! I also have to show a picture of her cat--she has Mickey ears on her side, isn't she cute--they call them "cracked" Mickey ears!

She is adorable and absolutely beautiful, she lives with her sister, who I did not get a picture of...

Cathy is working on her heart quilt--which will be queen size when she is finished:

Cathy is also looking for a piece of fabric to finish her last quilt: It is Robert Kaufman, Patrick Lose, Satinique Violet; if anyone has 1 yard or even fat quarters she would love to buy it, please let me know and I will get the information to her asap. She needs it to finish this quilt:

We miss Christine tonight--she isn't feeling up to par.

So, we all did work, and we all did get quite a bit done on our Spring Sewing Party--we made a real party of it, complete with Chinese food, pizza and homemade ice cream! Thank you Cheryl for a great time and great ice cream--butter pecan and chocolate! Pam brought a great cinnamon coffee cake--no lack of goodies here!

A little fabric search tonight and Boy Scouts!

Well, it is Wednesday and that means Boy Scouts; got in a little while ago and have been pulling fabric to make two string blocks for Mama Sparks--who is putting together a quilt for Matt, a marine who was injured in Afghanistan. He is the son of a very dear friend. They are easy string blocks if you can help out check it out. I have been busy pulling my dark reds and blues....will sew them tomorrow night! Maybe I can get some pictures in tomorrow too!

It is Snowing Again!

Well, it is snowing again and we have no school today! This could be a long week of snow if the weather predictions come through as true. We will have to see what happens--at this rate, we will be going to school until July--yuck!

Another St. Patrick's Day Quilt

Well, today I was able to finish the top of another St. Patrick's Day quilt. I will quilt it in the next couple of days and bind it off to be hung on the wall in my family room. I went from never having any St. Patrick's Day quilts to three in a week--thank you Friday Night Sew-In, that was definitely the push to move on this one!

Now I will move on to a tablerunner that I need to do for the Boy Scout's Ziti Dinner and a couple of odd projects that need to be finished. I think that the next holiday will be Easter, but I have the month of March for that.

I have updated some of the buttons on my sidebar today also--as I received new events or dates for the events they are now current, so visit some of them and get sewing also! Until tomorrow, happy quilting!

Friday Night Sew-In

Well, I did sew on the Friday Night Sew-In. I haven't finished yet but I have made good progress. I will show you the start to almost finished in these pictures:

Monthly quilters and a new project

Just a quick peek at the fabric to be used in my next project--I will be working on this tomorrow for the Friday Night sew-in! Perhaps not all will get used, but most will--I will have to see what "speaks" to me as it progresses.

A Couple of St. Patrick's Day projects

Well, I may not have been blogging much--but I have been sewing! Two of my St. Patrick's Day projects are shown below. The first is a small quilt that I just received the pattern for on Feb. 13th at the monthly Party with Patrick gathering. They are fun, and quick. (Remember, if you double-click on the picture you can view it up close)

The second one was a kit I have had for a couple of years and finally got around to making it--I was suprised at how it all went together from start to hanging in just two days!

I am now working on a larger wallhanging! I may even show it in progress....

Another Pillowcase

A Pillowcase Tutorial a Valentine Sew-in and a Giveaway!

Friday Night Sew-In

Well, it is now Saturday evening and I am just about to post what I accomplished! I didn't quite accomplish as much as I had hoped because I needed to take my DD shopping for items she needed to take back to college with her; along with spending a gift card and a little clothes/shoe shopping for her! Needless to say I didn't have the hours I was planning on--but I did have a great time with my DD! Then today, we (the whole family) left early and did some last minute errands with her and got her settled back into college for the Spring semester; where does the time go! Even with all the errands we really had a great family day; went out to eat then to the college bookstore and to her dorm room. It is hard to believe that I didn't get in until about 6:15 p.m. So, without further hesitation, I worked on the following: my little LOVE quilt for Valentine's--just need to quilt and bind it, finished sewing my Happy New Year table mat; the binding needed to have the hand stitching completed--and two double-sided fleece blankets--both are gifts. So all in all, not terrible, but did not begin my Schnibbles or Valentine table runners yet! I have now pulled all the fabric I want to use for them and will perhaps start tonight! So, without further hesitation:

I love the Friday night sew in! It definitely goes along with my resolution to sew a little every day! I will be home on Monday, so hopefully I will have a productive day with several more hours for sewing! Until tomorrow, happy quilting!

A Friday Night of Sewing

Join a Friday Night Sew In to do some sewing once a month on a Friday evening and even enter into a giveaway! Just a couple of things--

First off, if you haven't visited Bunny Tales to see their new BOM for 2010 you have to go there! I have grabbed their button and will put it on my sidebar so you can get there quickly! This is going to be another great year with snowmen this time!

The other item for today is to share another finish:

This is a small quilt which fits my stand--I should have taken a picture with it in the stand; well for the next one I will! I love the size and it was fun to try out the tapered satin stitch on my machine and to use varigated thread! Well, until tomorrow, happy quilting!

Look what the mail brought today!

I was the receipient of a Moda Petite 4 box which inlcuded a wonderful pattern for a great pin cushion! The Quilt Shoppe held a Holly Jolly Blog Bingo and had drawings everyday and I was chosen as a winner on one of the drawings! Thank you so much--I think I will be making a pin cushion! There will also be another Blog Bingo in the Spring, so stop by The Quilt Shoppe's blog, In Stitches and keep watching for the Spring round of bingo!

New Year's Quilt Topper

Holding true to my resolution, I am sewing/quilting everyday--and it feels so good! This is a picture of the little table topper top I finished last night--today I will sandwich it, quilt it and bind it! I also need to sandwich and bind the two runners I showed previously. Then it will be on to some new projects--hmm, I think I will look through some Valentine patterns and fabric and definitely get a tablerunner going for me for Valentine's Day!

I also want to thank all of the wonderful bloggers I have met since I began blogging in September! I can't thank all of you enough for following my blog and leaving such wonderful comments! Also, I have been very fortunate to have won some wonderful items through blogging and it is so much fun to have something come in the mail!

Happy New Year!

New Year's resolutions, do you make them every year? I generally don't, however, this year I am going to make a resolution that will definitely make me happy--I am making a resolution to sew every day; maybe just a little, perhaps for an entire evening--the amount doesn't matter just the sewing matters! In this resolution I hope to sew a few tablerunners ahead to have as a quick or needed gift! During the last couple of weeks I have sewed daily, mostly out of necessity getting teacher gifts and neighbor gifts ready and I have found the peace and joy that it brings it just too great to not sew daily! I also hope, in this resolution, to finish some long standing projects, take pictures and post again regularly! So while this is one resolution, it could have a multitude of outcomes!

While I haven't taken pictures of all of the tablerunners which have already left this home, I have a couple more in progress, this was the design that I chose to make this year for many people:

I also completed this great advent calendar for next year for my son and will also make one for my daughter. While they both love advent calendars every year, I am tired of buying ones that are just ok and want to fill the pockets myself. Love the sleigh design and will now sandwich it and quilt and bind it soon.

So, now that I am back on track, I want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year with health, happiness and quilting!

Snow Day and two wonderful Giveaways!

Woohoo--it's a snow day! It is great now, will not be so in June however! It looks like we are going to be in for quite a few chances of snow in the next week, let's hope they are not all big storms! It also looks like we will be having a white Christmas this year--which I do truly love to see.

Winter Wonderland and a Giveaway!

Well, I have been busy sewing! I have been making tablerunners that I will use as gifts for my son's teachers mostly. In the meantime, I will say that winter had begun here! It started yesterday and by 3:00 p.m. it looked like this:

So, as you can see, winter has begun! It is nice to have snow for Christmas and my son was sledding today, but I hope that by January 5 it all melts and temperatures are rising to the 50's at least. I know, I am living in a dream world; but one can only hope. I love snow for the holidays, but it gets old very quickly. Tomorrow I will take pictures of what I have been working on so that you can see that I have been busy!
